A refined graphite portrait by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, depicting Mrs. George Vesey and her daughter in 1816.
This graphite drawing by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres captures Mrs. George Vesey and her daughter, Elizabeth, during the artist's period in Rome. Ingres produced many such portrait drawings for British travellers on the Grand Tour, providing a refined record of their time abroad. The composition features Mrs. Vesey seated in a chair, while her daughter kneels beside her, their hands joined in a gesture of affection.
Ingres employs a precise, controlled line to define the forms. The drapery of the dresses, the lace of the mother's veil, and the feathers on the daughter's hat are rendered with careful attention to texture and light. The background remains largely empty, which directs the viewer's focus entirely to the sitters and their interaction. The artist's signature and the date, 1816, appear in the lower right corner, confirming the work's origin during his early career in Italy.
This drawing demonstrates the artist's mastery of the pencil, a medium he used to achieve a level of clarity and grace that defined his reputation among his contemporaries. The sitters are depicted with a sense of composure, reflecting the formal dress and social expectations of the early nineteenth century. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture style that Ingres refined throughout his life, balancing technical accuracy with a subtle psychological presence. The lack of heavy shading allows the structural integrity of the figures to remain the primary focus, showcasing the artist's ability to convey volume through line alone.
