A 1922 portrait by Suzanne Valadon, capturing Monsieur Mori with firm outlines and a direct, unvarnished approach to character study.
Suzanne Valadon, a self-taught artist who began her career as a model for painters such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinctively raw and unvarnished approach to portraiture. In this 1922 work, she depicts Monsieur Mori with a directness that avoids the idealisation common in the period. The subject stands in a domestic interior, his posture captured with a sense of physical weight and presence. Valadon employs a palette of dark, grounded tones for the suit, which contrasts with the more expressive, almost agitated application of colour in the background and the floor.
Her technique is characterised by firm, heavy outlines that define the figure against the space. The facial features, particularly the eyes, are rendered with a piercing clarity that suggests a psychological engagement between the sitter and the artist. Valadon eschews soft transitions, preferring instead to build form through blocks of colour and decisive brushwork. This approach reflects her background in the Montmartre art scene, where she observed the methods of her contemporaries while maintaining a singular vision that prioritised structural honesty over decorative finish.
This portrait provides an insight into Valadon's mature style, where the domestic setting serves as a stage for her character studies. The clock on the sideboard and the chair provide context, yet they remain secondary to the imposing figure of the man. The composition is balanced, with the subject's hands resting on his hip and the chair, creating a stable triangular form. Valadon's work from this decade demonstrates a move towards a more simplified, almost sculptural representation of the human form, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential character of the individual. Her ability to convey personality through posture and gaze remains a defining feature of her oeuvre.
