A formal lithographic portrait of the pioneering toxicologist Mathieu Orfila, captured by the French artist Marie Alexandre Alophe.
This lithograph depicts Mathieu Orfila, a Spanish-born toxicologist and chemist who became a central figure in the development of forensic medicine in nineteenth-century France. As a professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, Orfila gained recognition for his systematic approach to the detection of poisons, particularly arsenic. His work provided a scientific basis for legal investigations, transforming the way evidence was handled in criminal trials.
Marie Alexandre Alophe, a French artist known for his technical precision in lithography, captures Orfila in a formal, seated pose. The subject is dressed in the attire of a nineteenth-century academic, with a dark frock coat and a high-collared waistcoat. His expression is composed, reflecting the gravity associated with his professional standing. To his side, a small table holds a stack of books, suggesting his scholarly pursuits and his role as an educator. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the sitter.
Lithography was a common medium for portraiture during this period, as it allowed for the mass production of images for academic and public circulation. Alophe uses fine, controlled lines to render the textures of the clothing and the subtle contours of Orfila's face. The print includes the name of the subject and his professional title, which was standard practice for portrait prints intended for distribution by publishers such as Goupil, Vibert & Co. This work offers a clear view of the visual conventions used to document the intellectual elite of the era. It remains a record of a man whose contributions to toxicology influenced the intersection of science and law.
