An elegant eighteenth-century portrait by Antoine Pesne, capturing Mary Susanne Dinglinger with refined brushwork and a classic Rococo aesthetic.
Antoine Pesne, a French painter who spent much of his career in Prussia, produced this portrait of Mary Susanne Dinglinger, born Gutermann. The work captures the subject in a seated pose, reflecting the conventions of early eighteenth-century portraiture. Pesne was a court painter to the Prussian monarchs, and his style often combined the elegance of the French school with the technical precision favoured by his patrons.
The sitter is depicted with a soft, naturalistic approach to facial features, set against a dark, atmospheric background. Her attire, including the shawl and the structured bodice, is rendered with attention to texture and light. She holds a fan, a common accessory in portraits of the period, which adds a sense of poise to the composition. The lighting is focused on the subject, creating a contrast between her form and the surrounding shadows. This technique draws the eye to the sitter, while the muted colour palette maintains a sense of restraint.
Pesne's work is known for its ability to capture the personality of the sitter while adhering to the formal requirements of aristocratic portraiture. This painting provides a glimpse into the social circles of the time, specifically the family of the court jeweller Georg Christoph Dinglinger. The composition is balanced, with the subject positioned centrally, and the brushwork remains fluid, characteristic of the Rococo style. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the focus to remain on the individual. It is a representative example of the portraiture produced for the European elite during the early 1700s, demonstrating the technical skill and observational capacity of the artist.
