A formal Baroque engraving of Maria Josepha of Austria, presented within an ornate oval frame with heraldic details.
This engraving depicts Maria Josepha of Austria, who was the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I and later became Queen of Poland. The composition follows the conventions of late seventeenth-century European portraiture, presenting the subject within an oval frame adorned with laurel leaves. This framing device, common in the period, provides a sense of formal distance and dignity suitable for a royal figure.
The artist, David van der Plas, was a Dutch painter known for his portraiture. This print, executed by an engraver after his original painting, captures the elaborate fashion of the era. The subject wears a gown with lace detailing and a pearl necklace, reflecting the status and material culture of the Habsburg court. The lower section of the print features a cartouche containing the Portuguese coat of arms, surmounted by a crown, alongside Latin inscriptions that identify the subject and her royal lineage.
The technical execution of the engraving demonstrates the precision required for high-quality print production in the Dutch Republic. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume in the drapery and depth in the facial features. The background within the oval is rendered with subtle shading, ensuring the figure remains the primary focus. This work provides a clear example of how royal portraiture was disseminated across Europe through the medium of print, allowing for the circulation of the image of the nobility among a wider audience. The print is a document of the formal visual language employed to communicate power and dynastic legitimacy during the Baroque period.
