Peter Paul Rubens was commissioned to produce this portrait shortly after the subject's marriage. The Marchesa stands before a classical architectural setting, framed by a heavy red curtain that provides a contrast to her silver-white gown. Her attire is characteristic of the period, featuring a large, pleated ruff that draws the eye towards her face.
