A refined 1782 portrait of Madame du Barry by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, capturing the elegance and aesthetic style of the late French Rococo.
This portrait depicts Madame du Barry, the final official mistress of King Louis XV, captured by the hand of Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1782. Vigée Le Brun, a favoured painter of the French aristocracy, employs the soft, atmospheric qualities characteristic of the late Rococo period. The subject is positioned against a muted, naturalistic backdrop, which draws attention to her refined features and the delicate textures of her attire.
The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, where the sitter is presented with a sense of ease and grace. Madame du Barry wears a gown of pale silk, accented by a soft pink sash and a floral wreath held in her hand. Her hair is styled in the elaborate fashion of the era, adorned with feathers and roses, which mirrors the floral elements held in her grasp. The artist uses a light, controlled palette, focusing on the luminosity of the skin and the subtle sheen of the fabric.
Vigée Le Brun was known for her ability to balance formal representation with a sense of personal character. In this work, the brushwork remains smooth, allowing for a polished finish that was highly sought after by her patrons. The inclusion of the stone plinth provides a grounding element to the composition, while the surrounding foliage suggests an outdoor setting, a common trope in portraiture of the time. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the French court shortly before the political shifts of the late eighteenth century. It remains a representative example of the artist's technical skill and her role within the social circles of pre-revolutionary France.
