A refined stipple engraving of Prussian General Ludwig von Borstell, captured in his formal military uniform with hand-coloured details.
This portrait depicts Ludwig von Borstell, a Prussian General Major, rendered in the refined technique of stipple engraving. Luigi Schiavonetti, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in London, was known for his ability to translate the subtleties of painting into the medium of print. The work captures the subject in his military uniform, complete with the gold aiguillettes and decorations that signify his rank and service. The use of stipple engraving allows for soft gradations of tone, particularly in the modelling of the face and the texture of the uniform fabric.
The composition follows the conventions of early nineteenth-century military portraiture. The subject is presented in a bust-length format, turned slightly to the side, which provides a clear view of his medals and the high collar of his tunic. The hand-applied colour adds a specific character to the uniform, distinguishing the red collar and gold braid against the dark blue coat. Below the image, the inscription identifies the sitter as L. von Borstell, Königlich Preussischer General-Major und Divisions-Chef, providing the necessary historical context for the viewer.
Schiavonetti was a skilled technician, often collaborating with other artists to produce high-quality reproductions. This print reflects the period interest in documenting military figures through accessible, high-quality engravings. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with the production methods of the era. The focus remains on the clear, formal representation of the General, avoiding unnecessary background detail to ensure the sitter is the primary subject. This print is a representative example of the portraiture produced for the European market during the Napoleonic era, combining technical precision with the formal requirements of military documentation.
