A delicate pastel portrait of the young Dauphin of France by the French Rococo master Maurice Quentin de La Tour.
Maurice Quentin de La Tour was a master of the pastel medium, a technique he elevated to the highest levels of technical precision during the eighteenth century. This portrait depicts Louis, Dauphin of France, as a young boy. The artist captures the sitter with a soft, luminous quality that is characteristic of his work. The delicate application of pastel allows for a subtle transition of tones, particularly across the face and the pale pink fabric of the coat.
La Tour was known for his ability to convey the personality of his subjects through careful observation. In this piece, the young Dauphin is presented with a calm, direct gaze. The composition is framed within an oval, a common format for aristocratic portraiture of the period. The inclusion of the blue sash and the star of the Order of the Holy Spirit provides a clear indication of the sitter's royal status. The background remains neutral, ensuring that the focus stays on the subject's features and the texture of his attire.
Pastel was a preferred medium for many French artists of the era because it offered a unique combination of drawing and painting. La Tour utilised this to create works that felt immediate and lifelike. His practice involved numerous preparatory studies, which allowed him to refine the expression and posture of his sitters before completing the final version. This portrait reflects the refined aesthetic of the French court, where elegance and clarity were highly valued. The artist's skill in rendering the lace at the collar and the metallic sheen of the star demonstrates his attention to detail. This print reproduces the soft, powdery texture of the original pastel, maintaining the integrity of the artist's touch.
