A nineteenth-century albumen portrait of Louis Chantal, captured by the studio of Adrien Tournachon, featuring a personal handwritten dedication.
This albumen print captures a formal portrait of Louis Chantal, presented within a classic oval vignette. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed away from the camera lens. He wears a structured waistcoat and jacket, typical of mid-nineteenth-century masculine attire, with his facial hair styled in a prominent mutton-chop fashion. The photograph exhibits the technical characteristics of the period, with soft tonal transitions and a sepia-toned finish.
The image bears a handwritten dedication in the lower margin, reading 'Souvenir d'amitié à M. Louis Chantal' followed by a signature, 'Ad. C. Tournachon'. This indicates that the photograph was taken by Adrien Tournachon, a photographer who operated under the pseudonym Nadar Jeune. Adrien was the younger brother of the famous photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, known simply as Nadar. The studio stamp of 'Ad. Tournachon Jeune' is visible on the right side of the oval mount, confirming the attribution to his Parisian studio.
Such portraits were common in the mid-1800s, often produced as cartes-de-visite or larger cabinet cards for personal exchange among friends and colleagues. The inclusion of the handwritten inscription adds a layer of personal history to the object, transforming it from a mere commercial portrait into a memento. The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the sitter, which allows the viewer to observe the textures of his clothing and the specific grooming habits of the era. This print provides a clear example of the portraiture style favoured by the Tournachon brothers, who were instrumental in the development of commercial photography in France. The paper mount shows signs of age, including minor discolouration, which is consistent with the preservation of nineteenth-century photographic materials.
