A fine mezzotint portrait of King Charles II by Isaac Beckett, capturing the monarch in formal attire with the soft tonal depth characteristic of the period.
This mezzotint by Isaac Beckett depicts King Charles II, a monarch whose reign followed the Restoration of the English monarchy. Beckett was a practitioner of the mezzotint process, a technique that allowed for subtle gradations of tone and soft transitions between light and shadow. This method was particularly suited to the reproduction of oil paintings, capturing the textures of velvet, lace, and human skin with a degree of realism that line engraving struggled to achieve.
The portrait presents the King in a formal, oval format. He wears a voluminous periwig, a fashion that became standard for the aristocracy during the late seventeenth century. His attire includes a cravat of fine lace and the star of the Order of the Garter, which is pinned to his coat. The artist focuses on the facial features, rendering the monarch with a sense of gravity and composure. The background remains dark and indistinct, ensuring that the viewer's attention stays fixed upon the subject.
Isaac Beckett was among the first English-born artists to master the mezzotint, having learned the craft from John Lloyd. His work helped to popularise the medium in Britain, making high-quality portraiture accessible to a wider audience. The inscription at the base of the print, 'Carolus II D.G. Ang. Sco. Fra. & Hib. Rex', identifies the subject through his formal titles. The inclusion of the publisher's address, 'Sold by I. Smith at the Lyon & Crown in Russell Street', indicates the commercial nature of such prints during the period. This piece provides a clear example of the technical capabilities of early British printmaking, demonstrating how the mezzotint process translated the grandeur of courtly portraiture into a monochrome format suitable for collection and display.
