A sixteenth-century portrait of Katharina Merian by German artist Hans Brosamer, featuring precise detail and a distinctive green background.
This portrait by Hans Brosamer depicts Katharina Merian, a member of a prominent Basel family. Brosamer, a German painter and engraver active in the mid-sixteenth century, follows the conventions of Northern Renaissance portraiture in this work. The subject is presented in a three-quarter view against a flat, solid green background, a common stylistic choice of the period that directs attention entirely to the sitter.
Katharina Merian wears a dark, structured gown with a wide, white collar that frames her face. Her attire is accessorised with a gold chain featuring a circular pendant and pearls, alongside a belt adorned with gold discs. Her hands are clasped at the waist, displaying gold rings on her fingers. She wears a wide-brimmed black hat, which adds a horizontal element to the composition. The painting demonstrates the precise, linear approach characteristic of Brosamer's style, with careful attention paid to the textures of the fabric and the metallic sheen of the jewellery.
Brosamer was influenced by the artistic traditions of the Danube School and the works of Lucas Cranach the Elder. His portraits often feature this combination of stark, monochromatic backgrounds and detailed costume rendering. The work provides a clear view of the fashion and social status of the merchant class in sixteenth-century Europe. The preservation of the wood panel allows for a close examination of the artist's brushwork, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the delicate highlights on the gold elements. This piece remains a representative example of the portraiture produced in the German-speaking regions during the Reformation era.
