A formal seventeenth-century engraving of the jurist Johannes Philipp Schragmüller, presented in an octagonal frame with Latin biographical text.
This engraving depicts Johannes Philipp Schragmüller, a legal scholar and diplomat, presented within a formal octagonal frame. The work is characteristic of late seventeenth-century portraiture, where the subject is rendered with a focus on professional status and social standing. Schragmüller is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the attire typical of a seventeenth-century jurist or official, including a dark coat and a plain, wide collar. His long, flowing hair is styled in the fashion of the period.
The artist, Matthias van Sommer, employs precise line work to define the facial features and the texture of the clothing. The background within the frame consists of a cross-hatched grid, which provides a neutral setting that draws attention to the sitter. Below the portrait, a cartouche contains a Latin inscription detailing Schragmüller's titles and roles, including his position as a councillor and advocate for the city of Schwäbisch Hall, as well as his duties as a delegate to the Imperial Diet. To the left of the inscription, a small coat of arms is included, further identifying the subject's lineage and status.
Engravings of this nature were frequently produced as frontispieces for academic or legal publications, or as standalone prints for distribution among peers and associates. The composition is balanced and restrained, reflecting the formal conventions of the era. The technical execution demonstrates the skill required for copperplate engraving, with varied line weights used to create shadow and depth in the subject's face and garments. This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the German Baroque, where portraiture served as a primary means of documenting the lives and careers of public figures.
