A formal nineteenth-century portrait of Johannes Cornelis van Pappelendam, an artist and museum official, painted by the Dutch artist Johan Heinrich Neuman.
This portrait depicts Johannes Cornelis van Pappelendam (1810-1884), a figure of note within the Dutch cultural sphere of the nineteenth century. As an artist, art dealer, and amanuensis for the Museum Van der Hoop in Amsterdam, Van Pappelendam occupied a position that bridged the creation and administration of fine art. Johan Heinrich Neuman, a contemporary Dutch painter known for his technical precision in portraiture, captures his subject with a focus on professional identity and quiet composure.
