A portrait of the writer Ilya Zdanevich by the Georgian painter Niko Pirosmani, executed in his signature direct and unadorned style on oilcloth.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this portrait of the writer and avant-garde figure Ilya Zdanevich around 1913. Pirosmani often worked on black oilcloth, a material that influenced his aesthetic by allowing the dark ground to remain visible in unpainted areas or through thin applications of pigment. This specific work captures Zdanevich standing in a wooded setting, his figure rendered with the directness and lack of academic artifice characteristic of Pirosmani's output.
The subject is depicted in a formal dark jacket with gold buttons, contrasting against the muted, earthy tones of the surrounding trees and foliage. Pirosmani's approach to anatomy and perspective is unconventional, prioritising the essential presence of the sitter over realistic proportions. The tree stump to the right serves as a grounding element, balancing the composition while reinforcing the quiet, static nature of the scene. The brushwork is deliberate and economical, reflecting the artist's background as a sign painter in Tiflis.
Zdanevich was instrumental in bringing attention to Pirosmani's work, recognising the authenticity of his vision. This portrait reflects the intersection between the traditional, provincial life of Georgia and the burgeoning interest of the European avant-garde in non-academic art forms. The painting remains a clear example of Pirosmani's ability to imbue his subjects with a sense of gravity and stillness, despite the simplicity of his technical means. His use of a dark, often black, background is a signature element of his style, which helps to isolate the figure and focus the viewer's attention on the sitter's expression and posture. The work is held in the collection of the Georgian National Museum, documenting a period of artistic discovery in the early twentieth century.
