A fine eighteenth-century portrait miniature of the young George II, rendered in watercolour on vellum by Benjamin Arlaud.
This miniature portrait depicts George II, the future King of Great Britain, during his youth. Executed in watercolour on vellum, the work demonstrates the technical precision required by the portrait miniature tradition of the early eighteenth century. Benjamin Arlaud, a Swiss artist who spent much of his career in London, captures the subject with a focus on the formal attire of the era.
The sitter wears a full-bottomed periwig, a fashion that dominated the aristocratic portraiture of the period. His armour, rendered with subtle highlights, suggests his status and the martial expectations placed upon royalty. A blue sash, likely representing the Order of the Garter, crosses his chest, providing a sharp contrast to the muted tones of the background and the metallic sheen of the breastplate. The artist employs fine, controlled brushwork to define the facial features, conveying a sense of youthful composure.
Portrait miniatures were often commissioned as intimate tokens of affection or political allegiance. Their small scale necessitated a high degree of control, as the artist worked on a surface of prepared vellum. Arlaud manages to balance the decorative elements of the costume with a realistic rendering of the sitter. The oval frame, typical of the period, serves to focus the viewer's attention entirely on the subject. This piece provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the British court before George II ascended to the throne in 1727. It remains a representative example of the portraiture style favoured by the Hanoverian dynasty during their early years in England.
