A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Martin Tyroff, depicting Georg Friedrich, Burggraf von Kirchberg, in armour and an ermine-trimmed mantle.
This engraving by Martin Tyroff depicts Georg Friedrich, Burggraf von Kirchberg, rendered with the formal precision characteristic of eighteenth-century portraiture. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common device in period printmaking to suggest a sculptural relief or a framed painting. He wears a suit of armour draped with an ermine-trimmed mantle, signalling his aristocratic status and military rank. His wig, styled in the fashion of the era, frames a face captured with careful attention to light and shadow.
The composition follows the conventions of the time, placing the sitter atop a stone plinth inscribed with his titles. The drapery, which cascades from the upper left and pools at the base of the plinth, adds a sense of movement and volume to the otherwise static portrait. Tyroff employs fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the metallic sheen of the armour and the soft texture of the fur. The background features architectural elements, including a column and rusticated masonry, which provide a sense of depth and gravitas to the scene.
Martin Tyroff was a German engraver active in Nuremberg, known for his technical skill in reproducing portraits and topographical views. This work reflects the standard of professional printmaking in the mid-eighteenth century, where the primary objective was the clear and dignified representation of the sitter. The print serves as a record of the visual language used to communicate authority and lineage during the period. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the elements demonstrate the engraver's command over the copper plate, resulting in a work that is both a historical document and an example of the craft of the period.
