A refined eighteenth-century portrait print of the German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, rendered in a classic medallion style by Swiss artist Heinrich Pfenninger.
This portrait depicts the German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724-1803), a figure of significant literary standing during the Enlightenment. Heinrich Pfenninger, a Swiss artist known for his portraiture and printmaking, captures the subject in a profile view, a convention common in eighteenth-century commemorative prints. The composition is contained within a circular frame, which is suspended by a decorative ribbon motif, a stylistic choice that mimics the appearance of a physical medallion or wall-mounted plaque.
The technique employed is a combination of etching and engraving. The artist uses fine, parallel lines to create shading and volume, particularly within the facial features and the folds of the subject's clothing. The background of the medallion is rendered with a subtle stippling effect, which provides a soft contrast to the crisp lines of the portrait. The subject is shown wearing a period-appropriate wig and a cravat, reflecting the formal attire of the era. The lower portion of the print features the artist's initials, Pf, serving as a modest signature.
This work is representative of the era's interest in documenting the likenesses of intellectuals and cultural figures. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the orderly aesthetic of the late eighteenth century. The print is presented on a rectangular sheet with a clear plate mark, maintaining the integrity of the original printing process. It is a precise example of how portraiture was disseminated to a wider audience through the medium of print, allowing for the circulation of images of famous writers and thinkers across Europe. The focus remains entirely on the subject, with the minimal ornamentation of the frame ensuring that the viewer's attention is directed toward the characterisation of the poet.
