A detailed 1761 engraving by Manuel Salvador Carmona depicting the French painter François Boucher, created for the artist's reception into the Académie Royale.
This refined portrait engraving by Manuel Salvador Carmona depicts the French painter François Boucher. Executed in 1761, the work was created for the artist's reception into the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Carmona, a Spanish engraver who spent significant time in Paris, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin, capturing the textures of Boucher's velvet coat and the delicate lace at his cuffs.
The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century academic portraiture. Boucher is presented within a trompe l'oeil oval frame, resting upon a stone plinth. Below the portrait, the artist's tools are arranged: a palette with brushes and a roll of paper, which signify his profession as a painter and draughtsman. The inscription on the plinth identifies the sitter as the 'Peintre ordinaire du Roy', reflecting his status within the French court during the reign of Louis XV.
Carmona's approach to light and shadow creates a sense of volume in the sitter's features, while the surrounding attributes provide context to Boucher's career. The print serves as a record of the professional relationship between the engraver and the subject, as well as an example of the high standards of reproductive printmaking in the mid-eighteenth century. The clarity of the lines and the balanced tonal range demonstrate the skill required to translate oil painting into the monochromatic medium of engraving. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic circles of Paris during the height of the Rococo period, documenting one of its most influential figures through the lens of a contemporary printmaker.
