An eighteenth-century engraving by Jacob Houbraken depicting the Duke of Alba in formal military attire.
This engraving depicts Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the 3rd Duke of Alba, a figure of significant historical weight in the sixteenth-century Netherlands. Jacob Houbraken, a Dutch engraver known for his precise portraiture, produced this work as part of a larger series documenting historical figures. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century book illustration, featuring the subject within a classical oval frame.
The Duke is shown in three-quarter profile, wearing armour that reflects his military status. His expression is stern, with a long beard and focused gaze, capturing the gravity often associated with his role as Governor-General of the Netherlands. The engraving technique employs fine, parallel lines to create shading and texture, particularly in the metallic sheen of the breastplate and the folds of his sash.
Below the portrait, a rectangular cartouche contains the subject's name and titles in Latin and Dutch, providing context for the viewer. The surrounding border is decorated with subtle linear patterns, typical of the period's print culture. Houbraken’s ability to render human features with such clarity, despite the limitations of the engraving medium, demonstrates his technical skill. This print offers a glimpse into how historical figures were visualised and disseminated during the Enlightenment, often relying on earlier paintings or drawings as source material. The work remains a clear example of the formal portrait tradition, where the subject's status is communicated through attire, posture, and the inclusion of heraldic or administrative titles.
