A refined eighteenth-century portrait by Antoine Pesne, depicting Eleonore Louise Albertine with a theorbo in a classic Rococo style.
Antoine Pesne, a French painter who spent much of his career in Prussia, captures the aristocratic elegance of the eighteenth century in this portrait. The subject, Eleonore Louise Albertine, is depicted with a theorbo, a long-necked stringed instrument that suggests her musical accomplishments and refined education. Her attire, a deep blue gown with delicate lace trim, reflects the fashion of the period, while her powdered wig and subtle headpiece align with the stylistic norms of the Prussian court.
Pesne was the court painter to Frederick William I and later Frederick the Great. His work often features a soft, luminous quality, which is visible here in the treatment of the subject's skin and the gentle light falling across her features. The background, a muted outdoor setting, provides a neutral contrast to the saturated blue of her dress and the warm, wooden tones of the instrument. The composition is balanced, placing the sitter at the centre of the frame, which directs the viewer's attention to her composed expression and the graceful positioning of her hands upon the strings.
This portrait provides a glimpse into the social and cultural life of the European nobility during the early eighteenth century. Pesne's ability to render textures, from the sheen of the silk fabric to the intricate lace at her throat, demonstrates his technical proficiency. The work remains a representative example of the Rococo portraiture style, which favoured grace, lightness, and a focus on the personal attributes of the sitter. The painting is currently held in a private collection, reflecting the historical practice of commissioning portraits to document family lineage and personal interests.
