A formal portrait of the Zen monk Duli Xingyi by the Japanese artist Kita Genki, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This portrait depicts the Chinese monk Duli Xingyi, a figure associated with the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Kita Genki, an artist active during the late seventeenth century, specialised in these formalised depictions of Zen masters. The subject sits in a meditative posture upon a woven mat, his hands tucked within the sleeves of his dark, layered robes. He holds a ruyi sceptre, a traditional symbol of authority and spiritual insight within the monastic tradition.
The composition follows the conventions of chinso, a genre of portraiture intended to capture the likeness of a master for their disciples. The figure is rendered with a focus on individualised facial features, showing the signs of age and experience. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the subtle textures of the fabric and the precise lines of the face to command attention. Above the figure, a lengthy inscription in calligraphy provides context, linking the portrait to the specific lineage and teachings of the monk.
Kita Genki was known for his technical precision and his ability to convey the gravity of his subjects. This work reflects the cultural exchange between China and Japan during the Edo period, particularly through the influence of the Obaku sect. The silk support and the delicate application of ink and colour demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected in such commemorative works. The portrait is not merely a visual record, but a functional object within the ritual life of the temple, designed to maintain the presence of the teacher after his passing. The clarity of the brushwork and the balanced arrangement of the figure against the neutral background are characteristic of Genki's approach to portraiture.
