A formal Dutch Golden Age portrait by Cornelis van der Voort, depicting Dirck Hasselaer with his family in 1617.
This portrait by Cornelis van der Voort depicts Dirck Hasselaer, a prominent merchant and member of the Amsterdam city council, alongside his wife and young child. Painted in 1617, the work adheres to the conventions of Dutch Golden Age portraiture, where the sitters are presented with a degree of formality and restraint. The subjects are dressed in dark, sober attire, which reflects the Calvinist values of the period. The white ruffs worn by the adults provide a sharp contrast against the dark background, drawing attention to their faces and expressions.
The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a way that suggests a domestic setting. Dirck Hasselaer holds a pear, an object that may carry symbolic weight related to fertility or the cycle of life, while the child is positioned centrally, acting as the bridge between the parents. The child wears a cap and a white apron, typical of the period, and holds a small rattle. The inclusion of the child adds a human element to the otherwise austere presentation of the merchant and his spouse.
Van der Voort was a successful portraitist in Amsterdam, known for his ability to capture the likeness and social standing of his patrons. His technique involves a careful application of paint to render the textures of the fabric, from the heavy velvet of the garments to the delicate lace of the ruffs. The lighting is focused, illuminating the faces and hands of the sitters while leaving the background in shadow. This approach creates a sense of depth and volume, typical of the period's interest in naturalistic representation. The painting remains a clear example of the professional portraiture commissioned by the Dutch merchant class during the early seventeenth century.
