A detailed mezzotint portrait of David Gottlieb Reyher, imperial surgeon, by the German engraver Christoph Weigel, dated 1707.
This mezzotint by Christoph Weigel depicts David Gottlieb Reyher, who served as a surgeon to the imperial court. The work is a fine example of early eighteenth-century portraiture, utilising the tonal capabilities of the mezzotint process to create soft transitions between light and shadow. The subject is presented within a classic oval frame, resting upon a stone plinth that bears a German inscription detailing his professional status and character.
Reyher is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the voluminous periwig characteristic of the period. His attire, including a cravat and draped cloak, reflects the formal dress of a high-ranking official in the Holy Roman Empire. The artist employs a subtle use of chiaroscuro to model the facial features, giving the portrait a sense of physical presence. The background remains dark, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's face and the intricate textures of his wig.
Christoph Weigel was a prolific engraver and publisher based in Nuremberg. His work often documented the social and professional hierarchies of his time. This print is typical of the commemorative portraiture produced for the intellectual and professional classes of the era. The inclusion of the plinth and the surrounding text provides a clear context for the sitter's identity, serving as both a record of his appearance and a tribute to his career. The technical execution demonstrates the precision required for mezzotint engraving, where the artist works from dark to light to achieve the desired depth and volume. This print offers a window into the visual culture of the early 1700s, capturing the formal aesthetic of the German Baroque.
