An eighteenth-century engraving by Carlo Gregori depicting the painter Cristofano Roncalli, rendered with precise cross-hatching and classical portrait conventions.
This engraving by the Italian printmaker Carlo Gregori depicts the painter Cristofano Roncalli, also known as il Pomarancio. The work belongs to a tradition of portraiture intended to document the lives and appearances of historical artists, often produced for biographical collections or academic archives. Gregori demonstrates technical precision in his use of the burin, employing a system of cross-hatching and parallel lines to define the contours of the face, the texture of the subject's clothing, and the subtle play of light across the form.
Roncalli is shown in a three-quarter view, holding a small rectangular object, likely a palette or a sketch board, which identifies his profession. His expression is direct and composed, reflecting the conventions of seventeenth and eighteenth-century portraiture. The inscription at the base, identifying the subject as 'Cristofano Roncalli, detto il Pomarancio giovane, pittore', provides the necessary historical context for the viewer. The artist, Giovanni Domenico Campiglia, is credited for the original drawing, while Gregori executed the plate. This collaborative approach was common in the production of eighteenth-century print series, where draughtsmen and engravers worked in tandem to disseminate images of notable figures.
The print is characterised by a monochromatic palette, typical of the medium, which relies on the density of line work to create tonal variation. The background is kept relatively simple, ensuring that the focus remains on the sitter. This piece offers a clear example of the reproductive printmaking techniques that were essential for the circulation of art history during the Enlightenment period. It serves as a record of Roncalli's appearance, preserved through the skilled hand of Gregori, and remains a fine example of Italian engraving from the mid-eighteenth century.
