An eighteenth-century engraving by Pietro Antonio Pazzi depicting the Florentine painter Cristofano Allori, based on a drawing by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia.
This print by the Florentine engraver Pietro Antonio Pazzi depicts the painter Cristofano Allori (1577-1621). Pazzi was active during the eighteenth century, producing a large body of work that documented the lives and appearances of earlier masters. This specific engraving is based on a drawing by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia, who was instrumental in the project to record the portraits of artists held in the Uffizi collection.
The portrait captures Allori in a three-quarter view, wearing a soft cap and a heavy, draped cloak. The technique employed by Pazzi relies on a system of cross-hatching and fine lines to build volume and shadow. The play of light across the subject's face and the folds of his garment demonstrates the technical precision required for reproductive printmaking during this period. The inscription at the base identifies the subject as Cristofano Allori, also known as Bronzino, a reference to his familial connection to the celebrated Mannerist painter Alessandro Allori.
As a historical document, this print provides insight into how eighteenth-century audiences viewed the lineage of Italian art. The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the character of the sitter rather than an elaborate background. The subtle tonal variations achieved through the etched lines create a sense of depth, allowing the figure to emerge from the dark, atmospheric ground. This work is a representative example of the print culture that circulated throughout Europe, allowing collectors and scholars to study the features of historical figures long after their deaths. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the academic standards of the time, prioritising accuracy and formal rigour in the reproduction of portraiture.
