A refined Neoclassical portrait by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, depicting Caroline Murat and her daughter in elegant Empire-style attire.
This portrait depicts Caroline Murat, the younger sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, alongside her daughter, Letizia. Painted by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1807, the work captures the subjects in the Neoclassical style that defined the artist's later career. Vigée Le Brun, who had previously served as the official portraitist to Marie Antoinette, maintained her reputation for capturing the likeness and social standing of European nobility during the Napoleonic era.
Caroline Murat is shown standing in a formal interior, wearing a high-waisted gown typical of the Empire silhouette. The dress features delicate gold embroidery, which contrasts with the deep red velvet of the mantle draped over her shoulder. Her daughter, Letizia, stands to her left, looking up at her mother. The child wears a simple white dress, providing a visual balance to the more ornate attire of the mother. The background includes a glimpse of a garden through an arched opening, a common device in portraiture of the period to suggest a setting beyond the immediate interior.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's skill in rendering textures, from the sheen of the silk gown to the soft appearance of the child's hair. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to convey a sense of maternal affection and aristocratic composure. Vigée Le Brun uses a controlled palette, allowing the gold accents and the red mantle to draw the eye toward the central figures. The lighting is soft, directed to illuminate the faces of the sitters while maintaining depth in the surrounding space. This work remains a representative example of the portraiture produced for the Bonaparte family, documenting the fashion and social expectations of the early nineteenth-century French court.
