A formal 1775 engraving by Antonio Capellan depicting Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli, featuring precise line work and traditional ecclesiastical heraldry.
This engraving by Antonio Capellan depicts Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli, a figure of significant ecclesiastical standing in late eighteenth-century Rome. Produced in 1775, the work captures the subject within a formal oval frame, a common convention for clerical portraiture of the period. The composition is balanced and precise, reflecting the technical rigour of the Roman school of engraving.
Capellan employs fine, parallel lines to model the facial features and the folds of the cardinal's vestments, creating a sense of volume and texture. The inclusion of heraldic elements in the upper corners provides context to the subject's rank and lineage. The Latin inscription beneath the portrait serves as a formal record of his titles and his elevation to the cardinalate by Pope Pius VI in April 1775. The text identifies his role within the Roman Inquisition and his origins in Senigallia.
As a product of the Calcografia R.C.A. (Reverenda Camera Apostolica), this print represents the official visual documentation of the Vatican hierarchy. The engraving style is clean and restrained, avoiding excessive ornamentation in favour of clarity and gravitas. The monochromatic palette relies on the subtle graduation of grey tones, achieved through the density of the etched lines. This print offers a window into the formal portraiture traditions of the Enlightenment era, where the subject is presented with a focus on dignity and institutional authority. The work remains a clear example of the professional standards maintained by Roman engravers during the final decades of the eighteenth century, providing a historical record of the ecclesiastical elite.
