Beskrivning
A woodcut portrait of Camille Pissarro by his son, Lucien Pissarro, created in 1905 at their Hammersmith home.
This woodcut by Lucien Pissarro depicts his father, the celebrated Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Executed in 1905, two years after the elder Pissarro's death, the work serves as a personal act of remembrance. Lucien, who moved to London in 1890 and founded the Eragny Press, applied the technical precision of his printmaking practice to this intimate subject. The portrait captures the familiar features of Camille, including his long, flowing beard and wide-brimmed hat, rendered with the controlled, rhythmic lines characteristic of the woodcut medium.
The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders of the sitter. Lucien employs a series of parallel and cross-hatched marks to define the contours of the face and the texture of the beard, creating a sense of volume despite the flat nature of the print. The grey-toned paper provides a neutral ground that allows the black ink to sit with clarity, avoiding excessive contrast while maintaining structural integrity. The inscription at the bottom, 'The Brook, Hammersmith, 5 Mars 1905', situates the creation of this print within the artist's home and studio in West London, where he spent much of his career.
Lucien Pissarro was deeply involved in the Arts and Crafts movement, and this print reflects his interest in the revival of traditional printing methods. Unlike the spontaneous brushwork of his father's paintings, this woodcut demonstrates a methodical approach to image-making. The lines are deliberate, showing the artist's control over the woodblock. This portrait is a quiet study of a family member, stripped of the grandiosity often associated with formal portraiture. It remains a clear example of the intersection between the Pissarro family's Impressionist roots and Lucien's own dedication to the craft of the book and the print.
