A refined portrait of the Florentine banker Bindo Altoviti by the Italian Mannerist painter Francesco Salviati, dating to circa 1545.
This portrait depicts Bindo Altoviti, a prominent Florentine banker and patron of the arts, captured by the Mannerist painter Francesco Salviati. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of contemplation. He wears a dark, fur-lined garment that provides a sombre contrast to the lighter tones of his face and beard. The texture of the fur is rendered with precision, adding a tactile quality to the composition.
Behind the sitter, a dark green curtain hangs, decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. This backdrop serves to frame the figure, pushing him forward into the viewer's space. The lighting is focused, illuminating the features of Altoviti while leaving the edges of the canvas in deep shadow. This use of chiaroscuro is characteristic of the period, creating a sense of volume and psychological weight.
Salviati, a contemporary of Vasari, was known for his sophisticated approach to composition and his ability to convey the status of his sitters. In this work, the restraint in the subject's posture and the muted colour palette reflect the gravity associated with the banking elite of the sixteenth century. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the character of the sitter to remain the primary focus. The technical execution demonstrates the artist's skill in handling oil paint, particularly in the subtle transitions of light across the skin and the layered application of the dark pigments in the clothing. This portrait remains a clear example of the portraiture style prevalent in mid-sixteenth-century Italy, where the depiction of individual identity was balanced with the conventions of formal representation.
