A detailed 1836 etching by Carl Küchler depicting the renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
This portrait etching depicts the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, a figure of immense stature within the Neoclassical movement. Executed by the German artist Carl Küchler in 1836, the work captures the sculptor in his later years, presenting a contemplative expression that suggests the gravity of his artistic output. Küchler employs a precise, linear technique, using fine hatching to model the facial features and the texture of the subject's hair. The shading around the shoulders provides a subtle depth, allowing the figure to emerge from the plain background.
Thorvaldsen is shown in a bust-length format, wearing a coat with a prominent collar. The inscription beneath the portrait identifies the subject and his profession, reflecting the conventions of nineteenth-century printmaking where such documentation was standard. The artist's signature and the date are visible within the plate, confirming the work was produced from life, as indicated by the Latin phrase 'ad naturam' included in the lower margin. The composition is balanced and restrained, adhering to the aesthetic principles of the period.
Küchler, who was active in Rome during this time, frequently documented the artistic community residing in the city. This print serves as a record of the physical appearance of one of Europe's most celebrated sculptors. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing, which is common for works of this era. The print is a clear example of the technical skill required for portrait etching in the early nineteenth century, where the artist relied on the density and direction of lines to convey form and character without the aid of colour. It offers a direct, unadorned view of a man whose work defined the sculptural ideals of his generation.
