This portrait depicts Benedetto Varchi, a Florentine humanist, poet, and historian. Painted by Titian around 1540, the work captures the intellectual gravity associated with the subject. Varchi is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of contemplation. He wears a dark, fur-lined garment, which provides a stark contrast to the muted, architectural background.
