Portrait of an Artist - Charles Albert Waltner

A portrait of the French engraver Charles Albert Waltner at work in his studio, captured with expressive brushwork and a warm, atmospheric palette.

This portrait depicts the French engraver and painter Charles Albert Waltner in his studio. Waltner, a recipient of the Prix de Rome, gained recognition for his technical skill in reproducing works by masters such as Rembrandt and Rubens. The composition captures the artist at his workbench, holding a tool, surrounded by the tools of his trade. The background features framed prints, suggesting a space dedicated to the meticulous study of graphic arts.

The brushwork is energetic and direct, showing the influence of late nineteenth-century painterly styles. The palette relies on deep blues, warm browns, and muted ochres, which create a sense of focused atmosphere. The lighting draws attention to the artist's face and his hands, which are positioned over a plate or board. This focus on the act of creation provides a glimpse into the professional life of a printmaker during the turn of the century.

Waltner was a central figure in the French art scene, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the black and white medium of etching. This painting reflects the professional identity of an artist who spent his career interpreting the works of others while maintaining his own distinct practice. The inclusion of the small bottles and the framed works on the wall adds a layer of authenticity to the scene, grounding the portrait in the reality of the studio environment. The work remains a record of a man who bridged the gap between traditional craftsmanship and the evolving art market of the early twentieth century.
