This portrait depicts Ambrogio Spinola, the Genoese nobleman and military commander who served the Spanish Crown during the Eighty Years War. Peter Paul Rubens captures the subject in a three-quarter view, dressed in ceremonial armour that reflects his status as a high-ranking general. The dark, polished steel of the breastplate is rendered with precise brushwork, catching the light to suggest the weight and texture of the metal.
Spinola wears a large, white ruff, a common fashion element for the period, which provides a stark contrast against the deep, shadowed background. His expression is composed, conveying the authority expected of a military leader. The inclusion of a plumed helmet to his side and the hilt of his sword held firmly in his hand serve as visual indicators of his profession.
