This portrait depicts the Russian artist and critic Alexandre Benois, a central figure in the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement. Painted by his close associate Leon Bakst in 1898, the work captures Benois in a moment of quiet study. He is seated in a large, dark armchair, his attention fixed upon a document or book held in his hands. The composition is restrained, focusing on the intellectual character of the subject rather than grand artifice.
Bakst employs a muted palette, dominated by deep blues, browns, and soft ochre tones. The lighting is focused, illuminating Benois's face and the white paper he holds, which creates a natural contrast against the darker surroundings.
