A sixteenth-century engraving depicting Albrecht Dürer in profile, produced by the artist known as Monogrammist AL in 1550.
This sixteenth-century engraving depicts the German master Albrecht Dürer in profile, a format often associated with classical portraiture and commemorative medals. The artist, known only by the monogram AL, captures Dürer with his characteristic long, wavy hair and beard, rendered through precise, rhythmic hatching that defines the volume of his features. The composition is stark, focusing entirely on the sitter against a neutral background, which directs attention to the texture of the hair and the structure of the face.
At the top of the print, the name ALBRECHT DÜRER is inscribed in clear, Roman-style lettering. Below the portrait, a cartouche contains a Latin inscription, which provides context for the subject and his age. The inclusion of such text was common in prints of this period, serving to identify the sitter and often to provide a humanist commentary on his status as an artist. The monogram AL and the date 1550 appear at the bottom right of the cartouche, placing this work in the mid-sixteenth century, several decades after Dürer's death in 1528. This suggests the print was produced as a posthumous tribute to the artist, who remained a figure of immense influence in the decades following his passing.
The technique employed here reflects the technical standards of Northern Renaissance printmaking, where the burin was used to create varied line weights to suggest shadow and form. The print is a study in controlled line work, particularly in the way the curls of the hair are managed to create a sense of depth and movement. As a historical document, it offers insight into how Dürer's image was preserved and circulated by later generations of printmakers who sought to emulate his style and honour his contribution to the visual arts.
