A refined High Renaissance portrait of the Florentine merchant Agnolo Doni, painted by Raphael around 1506.
Painted around 1506, this portrait depicts Agnolo Doni, a wealthy Florentine merchant and patron of the arts. Raphael executed this work during his time in Florence, where he absorbed the stylistic innovations of his contemporaries, most notably Leonardo da Vinci. The composition reflects the influence of the Mona Lisa, particularly in the three-quarter pose and the placement of the subject against an expansive, atmospheric backdrop.
Agnolo Doni is presented with a direct, calm gaze, his posture relaxed yet composed. He wears a dark doublet over a red tunic, a colour scheme that draws the eye to his face and hands. The fine detail in his rings and the texture of his clothing demonstrate the technical precision Raphael achieved early in his career. The background features a distant, rolling terrain under a pale sky, which provides a sense of depth and space behind the sitter.
This portrait was commissioned as part of a pair, alongside the portrait of his wife, Maddalena Strozzi. Together, these works document the status of the Doni family within the social hierarchy of Renaissance Florence. Raphael employs a balanced use of light and shadow, known as sfumato, to soften the transitions between the figure and the environment. The result is a naturalistic representation that captures the individual character of the sitter while adhering to the formal conventions of the period. The painting remains a clear example of the transition from the early style of the artist to the more mature, classical approach he would later refine in Rome. It is currently housed in the Uffizi Gallery, where it continues to be studied for its contribution to the development of portraiture in the sixteenth century.

Artist Biography
Raphael
He was born in Urbino, the son of a painter. His father died when he was eleven, and by his teens he was already working in the studio of Perugino, whose smooth, symmetrical compositions gave Raphael his starting point. He surpassed Perugino quickly. He studied Leonardo's sfumato and Michelangelo's anatomical intensity and absorbed both without losing his own clarity. The Madonnas from his Florentine period (the Madonna of the Goldfinch, the Sistine Madonna) have a serene perfection that has been imitated for five hundred years and never matched.
Pope Julius II summoned him to Rome in 1508, the same year he commissioned Michelangelo for the Sistine ceiling. Raphael painted the Stanze della Segnatura: four rooms in the Vatican whose frescoes include The School of Athens, the single most famous image of classical philosophy. Plato and Aristotle walk through an ideal architecture surrounded by every major thinker of the ancient world. Raphael painted Michelangelo into the scene as Heraclitus, brooding alone on the steps. Michelangelo was furious.
He ran a large workshop that produced portraits, altarpieces, tapestry designs, and architectural plans. He was appointed architect of St Peter's Basilica. He was charming, diplomatic, and universally liked, which made Michelangelo dislike him even more.
