A formal 1829 portrait by Petrus van Schendel, depicting Adriana Johanna van Wijck in period attire with detailed lace and fabric textures.
This portrait by Petrus van Schendel depicts Adriana Johanna van Wijck, the wife of Johannes Ploos van Amstel. Painted in 1829, the work captures the sitter in a formal pose, reflecting the fashion and social expectations of the early nineteenth-century Dutch bourgeoisie. Van Schendel, who later gained recognition for his mastery of nocturnal light and artificial illumination, demonstrates here a precise approach to texture and material representation.
The sitter wears a blue plaid dress with voluminous, translucent sleeves, a style characteristic of the period. A golden-yellow shawl is draped across her shoulders, providing a contrast to the cool tones of her gown. Her hair is arranged in elaborate curls, a popular coiffure for women of her status at the time. The background is kept dark and neutral, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the subject. The artist pays close attention to the lace detailing at the neckline and cuffs, as well as the subtle sheen of the fabric.
Van Schendel studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he developed his technical proficiency. While he is often associated with his later market scenes and candlelit interiors, this early portrait illustrates his early career focus on traditional portraiture. The composition is balanced, with the sitter positioned slightly to the side, resting one hand on a piece of furniture. The painting provides a clear record of the sartorial choices and aesthetic preferences of the Dutch upper-middle class during the late 1820s. The work is signed and dated in the upper right corner, confirming its provenance within the artist's early oeuvre.
