A sixteenth-century portrait by Bartholomaeus Bruyn the Elder, featuring a woman holding a carnation against a deep blue background.
This circular portrait by Bartholomaeus Bruyn the Elder, dated 1541, captures a woman of the mid-sixteenth century with precise attention to costume and character. Bruyn, a leading painter in Cologne during the Northern Renaissance, produced numerous portraits for the city's merchant and patrician classes. His work is known for its clarity and the careful rendering of textures, from the fine linen of the sitter's headpiece to the embroidered details of her belt.
The subject is positioned against a flat, deep blue background, a common stylistic choice in Bruyn's portraiture that directs the viewer's attention entirely to the sitter. She holds a small red carnation, a flower frequently included in Renaissance portraiture to signify betrothal or marital fidelity. Her attire, featuring a dark outer garment over a lighter bodice, reflects the modest yet fashionable dress of the period. The inclusion of gold rings on her fingers further suggests her social standing within the urban society of Cologne.
Bruyn's technique involves a smooth application of paint, allowing for the subtle modelling of the face and the delicate play of light across the fabric. The circular format, or tondo, creates a contained composition that emphasises the subject's profile and posture. The inscription, visible on either side of the sitter, provides the date and indicates her age, a standard practice in portraits of this era to document the subject's life at the moment of the commission. This piece offers a clear window into the aesthetic and social conventions of the sixteenth-century Rhineland, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance formal representation with individualised features.
