This portrait by Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, captures a Venetian senator in a moment of quiet authority. The subject stands in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a steady, composed expression. He wears the traditional dark robes of his office, trimmed with fur, which are rendered with the fluid, rapid brushwork characteristic of the artist's mature period. The play of light across the fabric creates a sense of volume and texture, typical of the Venetian tradition of painting.
To the left, a window opens onto a distant view, providing a contrast to the interior setting. The inclusion of this outdoor element adds depth to the composition, while the heavy, draped curtain on the right balances the figure's presence. The inscription 'AETATIS XLVI' appears on the lower left, indicating the age of the sitter at the time of the commission. Tintoretto avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the psychological presence of the individual and the tactile qualities of his attire.
As a master of the Venetian School, Tintoretto utilised light to define form and mood.
