A 1606 portrait by Gortzius Geldorp depicting a young girl in a ruff collar and patterned sleeves, capturing the formal style of the Northern Renaissance.
This portrait by Gortzius Geldorp, dated 1606, depicts a young girl identified as a sister of Catharina Fourmenois. The subject, aged six at the time of the commission, is presented with the formal composure typical of early seventeenth-century portraiture. Geldorp, a Flemish painter who spent much of his career in Cologne, was known for his ability to capture the likenesses of the merchant and aristocratic classes of the period.
The sitter wears a stiff, white ruff collar, which frames her face and draws attention to her direct gaze. Her attire includes a dark bodice layered over sleeves decorated with a repeating floral pattern. The lace cap upon her head is rendered with precision, reflecting the status of the family. The composition is notable for its stark, dark background, which isolates the figure and emphasises the pale tones of her skin and the crisp white of her collar. The hands of the child are positioned naturally, resting in the foreground, while a delicate chain hangs from her waist.
This work provides insight into the fashion and social customs of the era. The inclusion of the age of the sitter, inscribed in the upper right corner, follows a common practice in portraiture of the time to document the growth and identity of children within wealthy families. The painting remains a clear example of the technical skill employed by Geldorp in his portrait commissions, balancing the formal requirements of the genre with a sensitive observation of his young subject. The panel shows signs of age, yet the clarity of the figure remains preserved, offering a window into the domestic life of the early 1600s.
