Balthasar Denner earned a reputation in the eighteenth century for his meticulous approach to portraiture. This work displays the characteristic precision associated with his practice, particularly in the rendering of the sitter's features and the textures of his attire. The subject, identified as the Dutch artist Cornelis Troost, is depicted in a three-quarter view, turned towards the viewer with a composed expression. He wears a powdered wig, typical of the period, and a dark velvet coat with gold-trimmed lapels. The presence of a book or portfolio in his hand suggests a professional or intellectual identity, aligning with the status of a painter or scholar.
Denner's technique often involved a high degree of finish, where individual skin pores and subtle variations in tone were captured with near-microscopic attention.
