A fine mezzotint portrait of a gentleman from the Dutch Golden Age, featuring an oval frame and an accompanying Latin anagram.
This mezzotint presents a formal portrait of a gentleman, identified with a degree of uncertainty as Nicolaas de Vicq. The sitter is depicted within a trompe l'oeil oval frame, a common convention in seventeenth-century printmaking that provides a sense of depth and physical presence. His long, flowing wig, characteristic of the late seventeenth-century fashion, frames a face rendered with careful attention to light and shadow. The artist employs the mezzotint technique to achieve soft transitions between the dark background and the illuminated features of the subject, creating a smooth, painterly effect.
The sitter wears a cravat and a draped garment, suggesting a status of some social standing. Below the oval frame, the print includes a printed inscription featuring an anagram related to the name Nicolaas de Vicq, which adds a layer of intellectual play common in the period. The Latin text, 'Sic Laude Vinco', translates to 'Thus I conquer with praise', reflecting the humanist tradition of the time. The monogram 'C.V.B.' appears at the base, serving as the only identifier for the printmaker.
This work belongs to the tradition of Dutch portraiture, where the focus remains on the psychological presence of the individual. The print is executed with a high degree of technical control, particularly in the handling of the fabric textures and the subtle modelling of the facial features. It provides a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch elite during the latter half of the seventeenth century. The composition is balanced and restrained, prioritising clarity and the dignified presentation of the subject. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print captures the tonal range and fine detail of the original copperplate engraving, offering a clear view of the artist's technical skill.
