A refined lithographic portrait by Jean Augustin Daiwaille, capturing the subject with delicate shading and expressive line work.
This lithographic portrait by Jean Augustin Daiwaille captures a subject with a direct, engaging gaze. The artist, born in Cologne and active in the Netherlands, was a skilled portraitist who worked during a period when lithography was gaining traction as a medium for reproducing fine art. The work displays the technical precision characteristic of his training, utilising the granular texture of the lithographic stone to create soft transitions in tone across the face and clothing.
The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a high-collared coat and a cravat, typical of early nineteenth-century European fashion. The shading around the jawline and the collar suggests a light source from the upper left, which provides volume to the figure against the plain background. The hair is rendered with loose, expressive strokes, contrasting with the more controlled hatching used to define the facial features and the folds of the fabric.
Daiwaille was known for his ability to capture the likeness of his sitters with clarity and restraint. This particular work, often discussed as a potential self-portrait, reflects the artist's focus on character and individual expression. The composition remains uncluttered, allowing the viewer to focus on the psychological presence of the man. The print demonstrates the capabilities of early lithography to mimic the qualities of charcoal or chalk drawings, a technique that allowed artists to distribute their work to a wider audience beyond the confines of private commissions. The paper shows subtle signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, making it a representative example of nineteenth-century portraiture techniques.
