A 1514 portrait by Hans Baldung, capturing a man in a fur-lined coat with fine detail on his jewellery and attire.
This portrait, dated 1514, is a characteristic example of the work of Hans Baldung, also known as Baldung Grien. A student of Albrecht Dürer, Baldung developed a distinct style that combined the precision of the German Renaissance with a personal, often idiosyncratic approach to form and colour. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view against a flat, uniform blue background, a common convention in portraiture of the period that directs the viewer's attention entirely to the sitter.
The man wears a dark beret and a heavy, fur-lined coat, which suggests his status and wealth. Beneath the coat, his white shirt is visible, featuring fine pleats and a gold chain draped across his chest. The chain holds several medallions, indicating the sitter's social standing or membership in a specific order. Baldung pays close attention to the texture of the fur and the metallic sheen of the jewellery, demonstrating his technical proficiency with oil paint.
Baldung's approach to the face is marked by a certain psychological intensity. The sitter's expression is composed, yet his gaze is directed away from the viewer, creating a sense of detachment. The beard is rendered with individualised strokes, adding to the realism of the portrait. The date 1514 is inscribed at the top of the panel, a common practice for Baldung, who frequently signed and dated his works. This piece reflects the broader Northern European interest in individual identity and the display of material wealth during the early sixteenth century. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing on the sitter's features and attire rather than an elaborate setting. It remains a clear example of the portraiture traditions prevalent in the Holy Roman Empire during the transition from the late Gothic to the full Renaissance period.
