A sixteenth-century portrait by Bartolomeo Passarotti, featuring a gentleman holding a bronze statuette and resting his hand upon a sword hilt.
This portrait by the Bolognese painter Bartolomeo Passarotti captures a gentleman of the late sixteenth century. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a dark doublet over a white shirt adorned with small, orange, crescent-shaped motifs. A prominent white ruff encircles his neck, a fashion typical of the period. His left hand holds a small bronze statuette, while his right hand rests upon the hilt of a sword, suggesting his status as a man of learning and martial accomplishment.
Passarotti was known for his interest in anatomy and his collection of antiquities, which often informed his work. The inclusion of the statuette serves as a nod to the humanist tradition, where the possession of classical objects indicated a refined education. The lighting is focused, casting the background into a deep, neutral shadow, which draws attention to the sitter's features and the textures of his clothing. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the hands and the metallic sheen of the sword hilt.
As a practitioner of the Mannerist style, Passarotti often employed elongated proportions and a certain psychological tension in his portraiture. The sitter's gaze is direct, engaging the viewer with a sense of immediacy. The composition is balanced, yet the inclusion of the statuette adds a layer of intellectual curiosity to the image. This work provides a window into the social and cultural values of the Italian Renaissance, where the display of personal interests and professional identity was central to the portrait genre. The print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, preserving the clarity of the sitter's expression and the fine details of his attire.
