Portrait of a Gentleman - Hieronymus van der Mij

A formal eighteenth-century Dutch portrait of a gentleman in his study, painted by Hieronymus van der Mij with characteristic precision.

This portrait by Hieronymus van der Mij depicts a gentleman, identified as Pieter Teding van Berkhout, seated within a study. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century Dutch portraiture, where the subject is presented in a setting that communicates their professional or intellectual status. The sitter wears a dark coat with a white cravat, his hand resting upon a document on the table. The presence of legal or administrative papers, complete with red wax seals, suggests a career in law or civic governance.

The background features a library with shelves of books and a classical statue, elements often employed to signify the education and cultural standing of the subject. A heavy blue curtain hangs to the left, adding a sense of theatricality to the scene. Van der Mij, a student of Willem van Mieris, adopted the refined technique of the Leiden fijnschilders, characterised by a smooth application of paint and attention to surface textures. The lighting is controlled, directing the viewer's attention to the sitter's face and the details of the documents on the table.

This work provides a clear view of the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch elite during the mid-eighteenth century. The inclusion of heraldic elements on the chair further reinforces the social identity of the sitter. The painting is a representative example of the formal portraiture produced in the Netherlands during this period, balancing individual likeness with the symbolic markers of status and profession.
