This portable cross, attributed to the Sienese painter Luca di Tommè, represents the devotional practices of the fourteenth century. The obverse displays the Crucified Christ at the centre, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist in the lateral terminals. At the base, Saint Francis of Assisi is depicted, reflecting the influence of the Franciscan order on Sienese religious art during this period. The top terminal features Christ in majesty, holding a book.

The work employs traditional tempera techniques on a wooden support, finished with extensive gilding. The gold leaf background provides a reflective surface, intended to catch candlelight in a liturgical setting. The figures are rendered with the characteristic linear grace of the Sienese tradition, prioritising expressive contours and symbolic clarity over anatomical realism. The quatrefoil terminals, a common feature in Italian processional crosses, frame the figures, creating a rhythmic structure that guides the viewer through the narrative of the Passion.

Luca di Tommè was active in Siena during the mid-to-late fourteenth century, a period following the Black Death that saw a shift towards more conservative, devotional styles. His work maintains the decorative quality associated with Sienese masters, yet it introduces a specific focus on the emotional state of the figures. The cross is designed to be viewed from both sides, with the reverse featuring a different iconographic programme, including Saint Michael and Saint Louis of Toulouse. This object functioned as a mobile focus for prayer, carried in processions or placed upon an altar. The preservation of the original form, including the decorative terminals, allows for an understanding of how such devotional objects were integrated into the religious life of the medieval period.
