Painted in 1909, this work captures the harbour of Saint-Tropez during a period when Francis Picabia was heavily influenced by the Fauvist movement. Before his later transition into Dadaism and abstraction, Picabia explored the expressive potential of colour and light in his depictions of the French Mediterranean coast. The composition is structured around the vertical masts of the moored boats, which create a rhythmic division across the water.
The palette is characteristic of his work from this time, featuring bold, non-naturalistic choices. The quay is rendered in shades of violet and purple, contrasting with the warm, golden ochre of the buildings lining the harbour. The water is painted with short, energetic brushstrokes, capturing the movement of the sea under the fading light of the evening.
