A serene view of the Seine at Port Joie, rendered with the distinctive cross-hatched brushwork and atmospheric colour palette of Gustave Loiseau.
Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the Post-Impressionist circle, frequently turned his attention to the rural reaches of the Seine. In this work, he captures the quietude of Port Joie, a location that offered him a respite from the urban density of Paris. The composition is defined by the artist's characteristic use of the cross-hatching technique, a method he employed to build texture and suggest the movement of light across the water and foliage.
The foreground is dominated by dense, textured vegetation, rendered in a palette of greens, ochres, and earthy tones. Loiseau applies paint in short, rhythmic strokes, which creates a sense of tactile surface quality. Beyond the bank, the river stretches across the middle ground, its surface animated by blue and violet tones that reflect the sky. Two small sailboats are positioned towards the right, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the natural setting. The background features a line of trees, their forms softened by the atmospheric haze typical of the river valley.
Loiseau was deeply influenced by the Impressionist focus on light, yet his systematic approach to brushwork distinguishes his output from his contemporaries. He often returned to the same subjects at different times of day or during different seasons to observe the shifts in colour and tone. This particular view of the Seine demonstrates his ability to balance the observation of natural phenomena with a structured, almost decorative application of paint. The work remains a clear example of his dedication to the French countryside, documenting the specific light and atmosphere of the Normandy region during the early twentieth century.
